The Story of Shrewsbury

Shrewsbury began as a row of lots that Balthaser (Baltzer) Faust laid out in 1797, along the old road between York and Baltimore — the reason locals still call Main Street the spine of town. German settlers first named the little crossroads Strassburg, “the town by the road,” before it took the name Shrewsbury and was incorporated as a borough on August 9, 1834.

For a place of about 3,800 people, Shrewsbury keeps a big calendar. The Shrewsbury Volunteer Fire Company’s Fireman’s Carnival has run for decades, closing every June with a parade right down Main Street. The rest of the year, the town’s antique shops pull weekend browsers off I-83, and the families who grew up here keep coming back for the carnival, the fireworks, and a small-town Christmas.

The town by the road

Shrewsbury’s shape is really the story of one road. Faust’s original 1797 lots ran along both sides of the York–Baltimore Turnpike, and the borough grew as a strip centered on that crossroads. Even the first name — Strassburg — meant “the town by the road.” It’s why so many of our designs come back to Main Street, the clock tower, and the storefronts that line it.

• 1797 — Balthaser Faust lays out the first lots along the York–Baltimore Turnpike.
• ~1830 — English settlers arrive and “Shrewsbury” replaces the German “Strassburg.”
