The Town That Changed Its Name
Before it was Shrewsbury, it was Strassburg.
The German families who bought the first lots along Joppa Road in the 1790s named the place for what it plainly was — the town by the road. Strassburg stuck for roughly thirty years. Then, as more English-speaking families moved into southern York County, the older English name came back, and by 1830 Shrewsbury was official again.
Four years later, on August 9, 1834, the Pennsylvania General Assembly incorporated the borough under that name. Both names describe the same thing from different directions: a town that exists because of the road running through it.
