Laid Out in 1797: How Shrewsbury Began
The shirt says 1834, and that date is right — but the town is older than its charter. Shrewsbury began not with a founding ceremony but with a survey.
Baltzer Faust and the Lots on Joppa Road
In 1797, Baltzer (Balthaser) Faust began developing the village by laying out lots on both sides of Joppa Road. That road later became the York–Baltimore Turnpike, and today it is Main Street. The shape of the town you drive through — lots facing the road, buildings pressed close to it — is the shape Faust drew.
Thirty-Seven Years Before the Charter
Those lots were bought, built on and lived in for nearly four decades before the Pennsylvania General Assembly incorporated the Borough of Shrewsbury on August 9, 1834. Until then, the land was simply part of the much larger Shrewsbury Township in southern York County.
A Town Named for Its Road
The earliest settlers here were mostly German, and they called the place Strassburg — “the town by the street.” By 1830, enough English families had arrived that Shrewsbury was reinstated as the official name. Four years later it had a charter.
Why the Diamond
The diamond at the centre is a nod to the keystone — Pennsylvania’s own mark — and to the Deco storefront signage that spread through small Pennsylvania towns in the 1920s and 30s, a century after the borough was chartered.
