Laid Out in 1797
The date on the design is 1834, the year Shrewsbury was chartered. But the town itself starts with a survey thirty-seven years earlier.
In 1797, Baltzer (Balthaser) Faust began developing the village by laying out lots on both sides of Joppa Road — later the York–Baltimore Turnpike, and today Main Street. Those lots were bought, built on and lived in for nearly four decades before the borough existed in law. The shape of the town you drive through is the shape Faust drew.
Until August 9, 1834, the land was simply part of the much larger Shrewsbury Township in southern York County.
